Son of Chilean painter and National Art Prize, Laureano Guevara, and Danish journalist and photographer Else Larsen, he settled in Chile in 1930. At 16 he entered the National School of Graphic Arts, where he graduated four years after as a publicist and photolithographic engraver. Among his most influential teachers, stands out who was his mentor, Antonio Quintana, who instilled in him the passion for photography.
In 1945, he got his first job at IMPRENTA Y LITOGRAFÍA UNIVERSO S.A., as a photo-lithographer and advertising designer, where he learned closely the functioning of a graphic industry. In 1948 he decided to work in freelance photography, installing a small laboratory next to the School of Fine Arts, where his father was a teacher. His first clients were artists from different disciplines who he portrayed along with his works.
During the fifties he joined the advertising department of Nestlé-Chile and later took over advertising management at Shell, where he was in charge of the design and production of the Agricultural Bulletin. The job offers of the productive sector were a motivation to form the company Ladrón de Guevara y Cía. next to the photographer Jack Ceitelis.
In 1960 he was summoned to be part of the important exhibition "Face of Chile", - along with Antonio Quintana, Sergio Larraín, Domingo Ulloa and Roberto Montandón, among others - to spread the country's image abroad.
At early 70s, Ladrón de Guevara was in charge of the creation of the corporate image of several public companies, subsidiaries to Corfo. This transformed him into one of the architects of the official image of modernization that the Chilean state tried to develop during the last decades of the 20th century.
In parallel, he developed his work with an authorial approach, closer to documentary photography. During his life he won several awards, being one of the most outstanding the First International Prize 1998, awarded by the Swedish Chamber Industry Hasselblad, in celebration of its 50 years of existence.
